Day One Down...

Well here I am using a few moments to update you all on day one, before I haul all the kids outside into the pool to exercise.

I think we did pretty good today.  When I look at it I think we had a few too many carbs, but I will soon cut most of those down as well.  For breakfast we had: 3 small pancakes.  For Lunch we had a  2in slice from a 5 foot long hoagi sandwich, a small amount of corn chips, and some raw carrots and broccoli with ranch.  I used salsa for my veggies only because since my gastric bypass surgery I get sicker than a dog when I eat Ranch dressing.  Then for dinner we used a hot dog bun with some pulled pork in it, and 1/2 cup of frozen corn cooked.  I also baked homemade choc chip cookies, and froze all of them but ten, this way each of us had two. I also packaged them in the freezer in groups of ten.  Same reason..Two each when I do thaw them out.

Overall it was a good day.  Our first day without candy..this one is pretty simple since we really don't eat much candy.  First day with no soda..this one is HUGE since we were big soda drinkers.  First day with no major processed foods.  That's another big one since most of our food was prepared out of a box or can.  And the first day of the rest of our lives.

Overall I say it was a success.  Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and well wishes.  This is a huge issue with me and has been all my life.  Unfortunately I passed it onto my children, and now I must undo the damage I have caused.  I hope and pray this gets us to where we need to be, and will help us all to be happier and healthier.

Again, many thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.  I love you all.

Good job! I think success is entirely dependent on how much you are focusing on how well you are doing with changes. This post is a great way to keep your family focused on the goal.

I'm behind you all the way! Good work. I like your focus on portion size. That's a huge issue. In the Book of Mormon, it says with the help of God we can make our weaknesses into strengths. In a few years, you will be teaching nutrition and weight control to those who have similar struggles. Go! Go! Go!

Way to go! Keep up the big work. One thing I do in our family too, is to replace everything with whole wheat: pasta, bread, buns, tortillas.

way to go amber! pickles are a good way to curb a salt-craving like chips. Also, sprinkle a little salt on some raw carrotts. Awesome. We love around here fresh cucumbers, salt and pepper, and vinegar. I use vinegar a lot for flavoring. Also, honey mustard is a good substitute for mayo on a sandwich. When my kids ask for something sweet, I always have them eat something healthy first (apple, carrots, slice of bread, etc.) Usually after they do it, they have forgotten about the sweet they want since their tummies are already satisfied. Keep up the good work!

Hey Amber! What an exciting goal! I also have had to change my habits. Some things that have helped me are getting to bed on time so that I don't feel too tired to exercise and so that I don't consume more calories to overcome my feeling tired.(D&C 88:124) I also try to pull out the veggies and fruits and wash up and prep a bunch all at once so I don't have to do it every day. I also tried to make my goals really reasonable at first, like just walking 2 miles a day, so that I'd actually do it. Then I worked up to running and have added cycling and swimming. I think one of the hard things for you is that you're starting in the dead of your "winter" when it's so dang hot. (like so many start in January around here!) You'll have nice weather when ours is frozen. There is also a great book called "Running with Angels" that was neat, you might enjoy. I liked that one. But hey, just keep up the good work, and if you stumble, get back up and keep going. You can do it! Never give up! Love you guys.

I have always struggled with weight. I have lost 1000 pounds or more. It is hard to keep it off but we can't ever stop trying and starting over. there is a simple formulae eat less and exercise more. good luck.

Sounds like you're on the right track Amber. I know soooo much of eating and exercising is mental. I have to talk myself into it every time I exercise, but I feel so good after I do it that it keeps me going. Once you get started your body will crave it. Keep it up and we'll keep you in our prayers.
Love you, Aunt Kay Lynn

I echo everyone else's comments. Don't forget to daily pray for strength to be able to make the changes, and talk to your family about how important it is to pray for help in changing things. Keep up the good work!

One more thing, I just got these new cook books Deceptively Delicious and Double Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld and they are awesome! They are very simple recipes that are kid's favorites but have pureed veggies hidden in them, and you can't tell. You should try them out!
