First off let me apologize for the lag in between posts. Ive been busy, and not feeling well. So I will try harder to update this. But I found a few moments to update it, and I wanted to update with an amazing find. Bountiful Baskets. They do this here in Arizona AND in Utah, so family in Utah I highly suggest you try this. You are not obligated to do this every week, or at all. I will be doing this on a weekly basis though. And each week your fruits and veggies change, and you get some cool stuff. Like in the past they have had Figs, bok choy, baby bok choy, papaya, mango's, sun chokes, artichokes and soooo much more. You have a choice between a regular basket or organic basket. The organic basket is 10$ more, and comes in a box already packed and you get less food. Me personally I don't care about if there were bug killers on my food or not. Ive never eaten organic, and am not dead and I'm not about to start. WASH YOUR FRUITS AND VEGGIES people. End of rant. So here are some pics of what I got. I will list it here. I paid 71$ for all of this:
*20 lbs of apples ( there is a mix of gala, red delicious, granny smith, pink cameo and yellow delicious)
*40 lbs of Pears
* 25 lbs of Hrd Red Wheat berries
*10 lbs of red potatoes
*4 Kiwi (Our dog ran off with one...she loves these to eat..sneaky pup)
*2 mango's
*living head of butter crunch lettuce
*2 Chinese Cucumbers
*1 large head of Cauliflower
*1 large head of broccoli
* 5 bananas
*5 apples (not the add on's...this was in the basket its self as the fruit)
*4 lb Papaya
*large cantaloupe
*5 lb bag of pears (this was in the basket...was not the add on's)
Now the things highlighted were the extra add on's you can pay for. The rest is what you get in your weekly basket. Or better yet what we got this week. Like I said it changes from week to week and month to month. There are lots of other add ons that we didn't get like their bread, or granola, or heirloom tomatoes (which Will said we are definitely getting next week....there were beautiful purple, and yellow and pink stripey, and red tomatoes the size of both my fists together..they were huge, and looked amazing)
So then we went to the outdoor market and bought for 10$ more, some black heirloom tomatoes, celery, carrots, and another Papaya (the kids like this dried).
So for my grocery list of 81$ I got everything listed above. I then decided to go to the grocery stores right this min, and see what was on sale, and what I would have normally spent on all of this food. After adding up all my lists from Walmart, Fry's (like Smiths...for those of you in Utah), and Sam's club, I would have spent over 193$ on all of these items. Not to mention the gas, and then all those add on's that were not on your list, but because you went to the store hungry or they looked good, you bought them.
So I saved us about $123.00 for the week. Plus I will be canning the pears, and some of the apples, so I not only have fresh fruits and veggies for the week, I also have Wheat to grind for breads and cookies and to add to my food storage, and then pears for much later, and apple pie filling to make some desserts for later as well. Over all I feel AMAZING with the savings I spent, and the fruits and veggies my family gets to eat.
I also belong to a facebook page here in Yuma that the families here have set up to exchange some of their items that their family doesn't use out of their baskets, and that we may use or others may use. Its a swapping page. The families here in Yuma also list out recipes that they have made and tried with their bountiful baskets. Like last week I guess there were sun chokes in the veggies. I have no clue how to use or prepare them, but family's listed amazing recipes on the site that made me want to try them if they were in the basket this week. They weren't, but that's OK. Its still fun.
